WATER | About | Artists | Online Exhibit | Photos

Artists were given a 6" x 6" wood panel on which to create or mount their work. Any medium was welcome, including painting, drawing, fiber, mosaic, collage, and photography. The topic, WATER, was interpreted by the artists any way they like.

Laura Green and Karyn Vogel had wanted to organize a group art show together for many years. This project was inspired by the wild success of Jordin Isip and Rodger Stevens' Panorama Project and Dime Bag 3 art shows, which brought together large and diverse groups of artists with a unifying device (the Panorama Project utilized a horizontal line running through the entire body of work). In WATER, artists' work is connected by the uniform square format and the topic. The ubiquity, profundity, and importance of water on our planet inspires contemplation.

The majority of participating artists live in Vermont, but several other geographic locations are represented as well, including New York, California, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The exhibit was at Penny Cluse Cafe in Burlington, Vermont, one of the best breakfast-lunch establishments in the area. Owners Holly Cluse and Charles Reeves are dedicated and generous supporters of the arts.

The work was on display at Penny Cluse Cafe from June 1 through June 30, 2010, and at the Brownell Library in Essex Junction for the month of July. The show is still viewable online.

Laura Green received her BFA from University of Akron. She worked in various art galleries in Philadelphia before moving to Bloomington, Indiana. Laura taught art classes for all ages and showed her own black and white photography at the Bloomington Area Arts Council. Here in Vermont, Laura has shown her work at the South End Art Hop, a wonderful community event. In her spare time, she works at Essex Elementary School and paints houses.

Karyn Vogel studied Animal Behavior at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, and is currently a graduate student at St. Michael's College. She exhibited her first series of photographs at Penny Cluse Cafe in 2008 in a show entitled Armistice. Karyn has collaborated with educators on student photography projects in area schools, including Essex Elementary, Edmunds Elementary, and J.J. Flynn School in Burlington. Of particular note was the Edmunds Middle School Senior Portraits Project, in which students photographed residents in local care facilities.
